2014 ABC Research Awards

The Research Committee of the Association for Business Communication welcomes your nominations for the Kitty O. Locker Outstanding Researcher Award and the Outstanding Dissertation Award.

Kitty O. Locker Outstanding Researcher Award

Purpose

The Outstanding Researcher Award encourages excellence in business communication research. The award honors a scholar who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the business communication discipline. The recipient will be announced at the ABC annual international convention and will receive a plaque and a monetary award. The award is sponsored by McGraw-Hill Irwin.

Selection Criteria

  • Overall contribution of the researcher’s cumulative publications in refereed journals and scholarly books
  • Significance of the research to the field
  • Overall quality of the research
  • Heuristic value of the research

Nomination Procedures

Nominations should consist of

  1. a letter describing the scholar’s research and showing how the research meets the award criteria and
  2. the nominee’s detailed curriculum vitae.  Electronic submissions are preferred.


Outstanding Dissertation Award

Purpose

The ABC Award for Outstanding Dissertation on Business Communication encourages excellence in graduate education. The award honors an outstanding doctoral dissertation or thesis in the area of business communication

The award recipient will be announced at the ABC annual international convention and will receive a plaque, a monetary award, and a one-year membership in the association. In addition, the recipient will be encouraged to submit an article based on the dissertation to one of the association’s journals: the International Journal of Business Communication or Business and Professional Communication Quarterly.

Selection Criteria

  • Contributes significantly to scholarship, research, and/or pedagogy of business communication
  • Demonstrates originality of thought and careful investigation
  • Uses an accepted research technique for business communication research
  • Was successfully defended within the two calendar years preceding the annual convention at which the award is presented. For example, dissertations eligible for the 2014 award are those defended successfully in 2012, 2013, or up to June 15 of 2014.

 
Nomination Procedures

Please send the following:

  1. A nomination letter from one or more faculty members on the doctoral dissertation committee describing the dissertation and showing how it meets the award criteria
  2. The nominee’s detailed curriculum vitae
  3. A copy of the dissertation in PDF or Word format
